Our expedition will pass through some of the most coldest, hottest, wettest and driest places on earth. These are certainly not the type of places you'd expect to find two pale skinned Irish lads, and there's good reason, we're not made for it. The only way to survive in such extreme environments is by using special equipment which will regulate our body temperatures and protect us from the elements.

The secret to regulating your body temperature is to layer your clothing so that you can add or remove layers as required.

In hotter areas we'll be using Patagonia's capaline long sleeve tops that keep sweat close to your skin, thereby keeping you cool. The fabric is tightly woven to ensure that no sunlight passes through to the skin. Indeed while testing these in the 40 degree Egyptian sun, neither of us had a hint of burn. On the really hot days we doused our tops, headscarves and shorts with as much water as we could spare, not quite the cooling lake that we dreamed of jumping into, but pretty sweet.

While in colder places such as the Bolivian antiplano, temperatures are likely to drop to minus 25 degrees, not a place you'd want to be caught in a pair of shorts and flip flops! Again, layering is the key so we'll be carrying about three thermal layers with varying levels of warmth.

We'll be using puffy goose down jackets to keep warm and breathable waterproof jackets to keep dry. Both are very lightweight and compactible, an important factor since we need to carry all of our gear.
